January Reading

For year two, we're starting at the beginning:

The Iliad - Homer link

I looked at a few different translations to read from and ended up with the old paperback version that I've had for years.  It's the Penguin Classics edition, translated by E.V. Rieu.  It's a prose translation and I'm wondering if this is a mistake...

Happy new year to everyone!

  1. My favorite translation is the Fagles. It's really good and clear and poetic. I've never looked at Rieu's.

    1. The Kindle version of the Fagles translation is a little pricey for me. I'll see if I can find it with some used book store shopping. I'll do at least some reading from a more poetic translation this month.

  2. I've read about half of Rieu's translation and I didn't care for it. The prose makes The Iliad tedious. I also recommend Fagles, but anything with verse is better than a prose translation imo.
